ATLANTA - The Crimson Tide remain dominant in the world of College Football, with an overtime win over Georgia
The battle between two top-tier SEC teams concluded in Atlanta Monday night as Georgia lost an unfortunate lead to the Tide with a final score of 26-23 in overtime.
Georgia held the lead in the fourth quarter using their defense as their largest asset keeping the left-hander Tagovailoa and his offense at bay but failed to do so going into overtime with a score of 20-20 with
This is Nick Saban’s sixth national championship.
The end of the fourth quarter was pressuring for both sides, as Alabama started it off with a field goal followed by a touchdown which tied the game 20-20. Jake Fromm for Georgia had an unsuccessful offensive drive to try and get the upper hand with the ball turning over just under the three-minute mark.
With fifty-six seconds left in the game, Tagovailoa runs the ball for a successful first down. With it being this close, both teams know every first down is crucial to obtaining the championship.
Yet like Georgia, Alabama fell short, ending the quarter with an unsuccessful field goal attempt from kicker Pappanastos.
Pappanastos looked as though his feet were not planted correctly, and caused the ball to drift to the far left side of the field goal
At the start of overtime, Georgia won the coin toss and chose to play defense first which was expected by many including the referee saying “That’s what I thought”.
Alabama turns the ball over on downs but still applies pressure to The Bulldogs forcing them to kick a fifty-one-yard field goal. However, they are successful with Blankenship “earning his scholarship” making the game 23-20.
Everything was looking for Georgia, sacking Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa following the 23-20 lead they obtained.
But then, tragedy struck for Bulldog fans. Right as the play clock hit ten seconds, Tagovailoa threw a forty-one-yard pass into the endzone where Alabama receiver DeVonta Smith was there to give them the championship. This was Smith’s first and only catch of the night.
